ENGINEER'S REPORT,
The Borough Engineer's report fo I the past month, road at last night's I, meeting of the Masterton Borough was as follows: — The re-formation of Dixon Street footpath lias been completed, also the footpath in Archer Street has been completed iind top-dressed with sand. Two new culverts were put in in Archer Street for Mr MoHattie. A dm in leading off the South Road through Mr Mtttrie's paddocit was thoroughly cleaned. I have also had throe extra men on the last fortnight mowing the grass in some of the streets. 'J ho broom and gorse in i the horse paddock at the Park, and in the metal pit in Church Street has j been out down and grubbed. (Shippings of tSier eh&nne'ls on som*» of the streets and cleaning of the footpath on the East side of Queen Street has been, done, but''the weather during this month has ; been greatly against good work on account of the rain, etc. The footpaths in Trustee Street and Bannis- i ter Street have been reformed and | graded. ' I A portion of Perry Street, Chapel Street, and Hall Street, have been coated with tar and shingle. The drain in Cock-burn Street has been thoroughly cleaned out and some of the culverts repaired temporarily. ;.'■,■ , The usual routine work .such as cleaning of channels and roadways has had regular attention. Sewers and sewerage farm. —I have made a start on the Cole Street drainage, having started putting in the new manholes and lamp holes at the lower end of the street. At the sewage farm I have had the long grass cut in between the land channels. Waterworks.—l regret to say that during the month Ihave experienced 'bad luck at the headworks. The continuous rains up in the ranges have brought the river down in flood and completely demolished the dam. 1 made an examination of it, and had extra men put on and completed the re-building of it in about 10 days, but, • since then the river has flooded again, and taken a portion of the last one erected away, and I am of the opinion that it would be in the best interests of the Council to allow mo to erect a concrete wall in place of the clay and boulder one as at present. I tho cost to bo about £BO to £IOO. j The new one has cost about £55, and iis liable to bo washed away at any
time. . . , Material.—The following materials have Ik'p i used on the streets or carted For stock to Hope Street vart l:—Metal pit and broken, 14yds, [sand on footpaths, 15yds, asphalt U yds; stone for stock, 18yds, sand for stock, 20yds; tar for streets, 229-j .nalloius; shingle on streets, 73* c. yds. " On the motion of the Mayor, seconded hv Or. Pragnell, the Engineer was authorised to erect the concrete wall at the head works at an opportune time. The report was adopted.
