MR A. H. HERBERT AT MASTERTON.
Ma- A. H. Herbert, on© of the Opposition candidates, addressed a crowd of several hundred people from a lx>rry in Church Street, Master-ton, on Saturday night. The candidate was l evidently iia good fighting trim, and met with a. good reception. He introduced his remarks by referring to the fact tfoiait the "W&irarapa Daily TlLmes," after promising to remain neutral as between the Opposition candidates', had announced itself a supporter of the candidature. of : j Mr G. it. Sykes. ih'e candidate ex- I plained that he had lived for many j years im the Masterton district; that he had sprung from, the worker©; that he was a Liberal to the backbone ; and 1 that he was neither nominated nor supported by the wealthy classes. He then, proceeded to deal With the land question, taxation, railways', etc. He dladimed fJiat the present Government was destitute of a land policy, and had increased taxation enormously. He stated that, dif returned to Parliament, he would endeavour to secure land for the people, and a reduction ins the taxation, of necessaries! of life. In the latter, conhectibn he commented upon the fact that Mr Hogg wa& supporting] a Government which. threw out his Flour Duties. Abolition Bill. At the conclusion of his address, Mr Herbert was besieged with questions, the whole of which he answered in a stradghtfiorkard manner, with the exception of one relating to the i c*-n,s>-Ing question, which he said he did not feel called upon to answer. Mr Hamilton (the Opposition candidate for Awarua) also spoke for fifteen' minutes, and was' weMi received. A vote of thanks to Mr Allen, and renewed confidence in the Mi ai scry, was proposed, ,alteo an amendment of thanks to Mr Allen and no-co-.fi-dence in the Ministry. The Mayor, who presided, called for a show of hands, and said that about 30 won* held up in favour of each uioiaon. I Therefore, he declared neither car- | ried. I MIR MABBEY AT TAUMARUNUI.
