A PASTORAL CIRCULAR.
The pastoral circular from Arehlbishop Redwood, which w!as read in thte. (Roman Catholic Churches, on Sunday, is of great importance, seeing that it ha*, been issued only a few days ibefore the licensing poll: Thie texfc of the circular is conveyed in a telegram from Palsmerstoin Jsorth. I<t woulid appear -that a. lecturer for the No-license League has stated that if; national prohibition, were carried, the use of 'win© for medicinal and sacrar mental pnurposesi would. ulltimia, tely be Kohibited. .It is only fair to 6ftate, iwever, that if the Rev. Hammond made such an assertion, he did sio without authority. It is also right that the public should know- that there is' at present no statutory provision against the use of fermented wine for sacramental pua-poses, anld that this provision would, requare to be- made by the Legislature before it could be enforced. Such a; contin? gency, it need hardly be said, would be exceedingly remote. As for th© circular itself,, it will be observed that it refers* only to national prohibition, and not to weal -Nb-lioense.
