In his address at Mauricevillo West, Mr G. R. Sykes drew attention to the leading article appearing in the Age in regard to his statements ro preference to, unionists. The candidate stated that his remarks thereon were distorted. It was made to appear that Miis attitude in regard to preference might act detrimentally to the iarmers and the farming cominunity, or to the commercial world generally. Now, he was a farmer 'himself, and it would be highly absurd to presume that he would be prepared to offer ■himself and his farmer friends on the sacrilicial aJtar-'of-union preference. He knew full well that the farm workers in his distinct were on the whole well 'paid for their services, and in return they gave every satisfaction to the employers. Mutual satisfaction was existant. This being the *case . a Fniin Workers' Union was to'his mind unnecessary, but in the event of a union being formed ho would strongly oppose the insertion of a preference' clause into any award without the unanimous consent of the employers. The candidate pointed out that the system of preference as -now permitted ■by the Arbitration Court of New Zealand was, that a preference clause could only bo inserted in an. award by the consent of the parties interested —the employer ami the employee. What he had often stated was this, that where these parties unanimously consented to "he j referential clause the parties had perforce to loyally aibidc by the contract tliey had filtered into. Ho .would not favour anything in the coercion, and if any awards now existant were of a coercive nature, either from .the view point of the. employer or the employee, lie would suggest that these matters l>e immediately inquired into with a view to the adjustment of the difficulties:
