ST. MATTHEWS' FETE
A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING
The •promoters of the St. Matthew's Fete were again, treated to showery weather yesterday afternoon; but, itii spite of the gloomy aspect, a large crowd gathered at the old isihowgroiunds. I'he stallls were all aarainged under the grandstand, and these, beiaig stocked with useful goods, were well patronised by the visitors. .. The., stafc and theiir attendants were as- foMow: — Plaiiii work, Mesdamles Wdnzeniberg and James; afternoon tea, Mesdames de Castro and Lander; G.i'.S. Stall, Miss Dixon,j sweets, Miss Keith; bran: tub, Miss Staee. An. amusing and enitevtainlng programme of sports was got - off fot\>een tile showers. Olthier competitions were a>s- follow: —.Needle threading on horseback, D. Jensen 1, R. Donald 2. Tug of war, on horseback, D. and H. Jensen, R. Miiller and another 1. Orange race, D. Jensen. 1. Boys-' 100 yards race, S. Wilson 1, Dickerson 2. A cessation in the rain permitted the dhiildlren, under Mrs- Kendal, to perform tine Maypole Dance. This w.ent off without a bitch, and wa>s loudly applauded.
A sum of £lB was- taken at . the gate, and with other takings it is expected that a very satisfactory aiinount will be cleared.
The clowns, Joseph, Wiiliam and Walter, succeeded admirably in. their task of arcrasing the visitors. The Master-ton South Brass Band rendered choice selections during the afternoon.
The success of the function was undoubtedly due to the energy of Messrs G. W. Arfo'dge and F. Crosbie and their many assistants, who deserve 'tbe highest praise. „
