THE ENGLISH TEAM uV AUSTRALIA. MATOH WITH VICTOx UA - A CLOSE GAME. (Received Last Night, 6.50 o'clock.) MELBOURNE, Nov 21. There was perfect weather and an excellent wicket for the continuance of the M.C.C. v. Victoria match.
Armstrong a.nd Kylo took up the bowling. Hitch drove Armstrong toj the boundary,-and in trying to repeat tho stroke ho played the ball on to the wicket. Mead succeeded, and he quickly lost Rhodes, who got his leg in front. Rhodes batted stolidly for three hours, and scoured two fours. Heame was next. He was extra cautious, and succumbed to Laver, who relieved Kyle. Mead showed freedom, but was bowled .neck and crop by a beauty. Foster joined Douglas, but the partnership was short-lived, Armstrong dismissing Foster with the second ball, completely non-plussing the batsman. Armstrong captured three wickets to-day for 20, Laver at one stage had two for mil. Woolley shaped uncomfortably, and the end came quickly, Mac-row taking both wickets, Iremonger playing on. The innings lasted 277 minutes. England's display was' again disappointing. The collapse was attributed to the deceptive pace of the wicket, which was perfect. It was arranged that if the niatoh was not over to-night to play to-morrow from 11 to 2.30. Warner sailed by the mail boat for Sydney to-day. He left instructions to force the game with the hope of winning, but the batsmen observed defensive tactics.
Seitz and Kortlang opened Victoria's second innings to the bowling of Foster and Douglas. The latter in the third over cleanrbowJed Seitz. Ransford began with four off Foster, but a period .of dullness followed. Kortlamg hit Foster hard to Hobbs and attempted' a 'hopeless ran.. He was unable to recover his ground before Hobbs threw down the wicket. Smith, who followed, saw Ransford hit Douglas to the boundary twise in succession. Both batted brightly, Ransford scoring well.on the leg, and Smith cutting and driving. Fifty occupied fifty-six minutes. Ransford mishit, and was caught in the slips. He batted for 65 minutes. Armstrong joined Smith, who thrice off-drove Hearne uppishly for eight in one over. Armstrong made a lovely leg hit to the boundary off Hearne, followed by Smith with a, brilliant square-leg cut for four, ..bringing the century rp in 99 minutes. On resuming after rea time, Armstrong was dismissed by the fifth ball, which he played on. Matthews saw Smith reach fifty. He occupied 69 minutes. "When 55 Smith gave a hard ohance. of caught and bowled by Iremonger. Four runs later Smith was missed in the slips by Rhodes off Hitch. He then drove Hitch for a. fourer, passing his first innings score. Hobbs, at mid-off, in returning smartly, fell. His right arm was slightly .injured, and lie retired temporarily..Smith was cheered when he made a straight-drive and, snicking Hitch, scored two fourers in succession.. One (hundred, and fifty was registered in 132 minutes. Matthews and Smith compiled 50 in 28 minute's, which, was the fastest scoring during the match. SmiitJr foolishly attempted. to run when MaftjJksws, called. A smart return from Rhodes at cover point and Smith was out. He batted brilliantly for 95 minutes, and scored 10 4's. Brown began busily, Matthews pulled Douglas for four, leaving one hundred to win, Two balls later he played the ball on. Brown batted for 28 minutes, with graceful and beautiful timing, scouring four 4's. Laver and Kyle saw 200 up in 186 minutes. Kyle foolishly outran himself going for an impossible third run off Laver's stroke.' 1 Smith was disappointed at an unsuccessful appeal of stumping Carkcek off the last ball of the day.
