EXTRAVAGANCES.
When the Opposition points to the extravagance of the Ward Adminis*tration, it is immediately ashed by claquers of the Government, "Where is the. extravagance ? What would you cut down? How • would you effect economies?" These questions have been answered by the Prime Minister himself. Three years ago, or thereabouts:, lie said thai the expenses of the Givil Service might be cut dowai by quarter of a mil Eon, wiithout the service being impaired in the least. That was a candid admission, of (extravagance, and one that, still holds good, for the cutting down process has been nothing more than a sham. If the evidence of other extravagances were required, it. could be found in the deliberate waste in connection with the Government Printing Office; the throwing away, of money on useless public Works, and on antedekwin-n methods of constructing them; the creation of useless* and unnecessary State Departments! ; and the overlapping of the various branches of the Civil Service.
