PERSONAL.

Mr James Brown, of Masterton, has been elected a Vice-President of the Waararapa Horticultural and Industrial Society. A Christahurch telegram received last night, stated that Charles Cress, the well-known jockey, and .son of Mr James Cress, formerly of Masterton, died in the Christchurch hospital yesterday. An inquest was held in the afternoon, when a verdict was returned that death was due to gastro-eneritis. The deceased was a promising lad, who •had for some imonths past been employed in a Hastings stable. He had ridden the winners in a number of important races, both in the Wairarapa and other parts of the Dominion. His a-elatives will' have the sympathy of a large circle of friends in their sad bereavement. Sir Joseph Ward speaks at Palmerston South on Thursday night, at Waimate on Friday, at Oamaru on Saturday, and reaches Christchurch on Monday, the 20th instant.

Mr A. W. Hogg, M.P., who opened his campaign in Masterton last night, was able to stand throughout his address, although he was evidently suffering physical pain. He spoke for nearly two hours before resuming his seat. At the close of his address he complained to friends that his knee pained him, otherwise he felt no illeffect of the strain. Mr Hogg hopes to be Able, to speak at Eketahuna, and probably at one or two other centres before the day of the election.

Mr W. F. Massey, Leader of the Opposition t who spoke at Eketaflmna last night, addresses a meeting at Napier to-night. He wiH then proceed to the South Island, speaking at Winton (in the Premier's electorate) on the 17th inst.

Mr W. C, Eccleton, of the Bank of New Zealand at Pahiatua, has l>een transferred to Levin.

His Excellency the Governor will visit the Nelson district next week, being desirous of inspecting the Motueka fruit farms.
