RESIGNATION OF MR BALFOUR.

The Hon.. A. J. Balfour lias resigned the leadership of the Unionist Party, on the grounds of ill health.

Mr Balfour's resignation lias fallen as a bombshell into the Unionist camp, especially as lie had carefully concealed any impatience at the recent attacks on hi--; leadership, and the Halsbury Club had oven passed a resolution supporting his and Lord Lansdowno's leadership in the coming struggle. Mr Balfour announced his resignation at a hurriedly-convened meeting of the London Conservative Association's Executive.
He explained that, -while ho would retain his .'.eat, he desired relief from the increasing strain of leadership. A younger leader was required; one who was more capable of adapting himself to the new problems which were perpetually arising.
His strength xrn§ unequal to copo with the coming crisis. His medical advisers had opposed Ids participation in tho Home Rule campaign.
