THE PREMIERS PROTEST.
The Premier protests against the inference that the election of his opponent for Awnrua. to the Southland County Council over a strong Government siunporter conveys a political significance. That is- purely a matter of opinion. The Prime Minister is entitled to' aM the satisfaction to be derived fjrom the defeat of one of his henchmen at She very moment, tliat he is placating the electors ofj his- constituency. The wonder is that he does not assert thaf the ovei>whelimiing victory of Mr .Hamilton at the County Council election is an in-, dilation of .the waning popularity of l tbM genltHeman, and of the strong position held by Government supporters in the public opinion. The protest of the Prime Minister is necessary, no doubt, at this juncture, though it is not very effective.
