An old Canterbury identity pjassed away in the person of Mr William Crowe. Deceased landed in New Zealand in 1857.
Mr Wm, Archibald Spiers died at Wairoa (HaWke's Bay), a, few-days ago. The deceased arrived at Dargaville (Auckland),' 35 y£ars ago' from Scotland, - ... - Miss Feist is to continue as teacher at the Garrington school until the end of the present year. An Auckland telegram states that Sir John Findlay and His family have gone into residence at Parnell.
Mr F. C. Brockett, head-teacher of the Lower Taueru schools, has been transferred to Park vale. <
Miss Wilson, of the Newton school, has been appointed secondaj-y assistant .a.t the Carterton District High School.
Owing to the pressure of business, Sir Joseph Ward has postponed his departure for the South for two or three days. Extended leave of absence has been granted to Miss Haggjtt, of the Lansdowii school, to November 20tli; Miss Magill, assistant at the Pongaroa. school, has been granted leave until the end of the year. Mr G. H. Ralph, teacher of the Saunders' Road School, has been granted leave until the end of the year.
Mr J. Hessey will leave Masterton this morning'' for Christchurch, en route for Hokitika and Keefton. He will Ik) away about three weeks. Mr and Mrs Alex. Mritrie left Masterton yesterday on a health-recruting visit to the South Island.
Mrs Brown and Miss Brown, of Wangaeliu, Masterton, who have been on a vhit to the Old Country, return to Wellington to-day by the Moeraki, from Sydnev. / r Mr Cyril W. Tanner, the Government candidate for the Wairarapa seat at the coining election, will probably address a political meeting at Masterton at an early date.
Captain and Mrs Moss are at present on a visit to Masterton.
Mr William Bond, who is said to have beeen the actual capturer of Te Kuiti (with the assistanuce of two privates), died at Te Kuiti last week, aged 72. ' ' '
A Press Association cable from London announces the death of Mr John Morrison, who in the early sixties acted in the honorary capacity of agent for the New Zealand Government in London. Mr Morrison, who was at one time in business as a merchant, left net personality sworn at £87,000. Mr W. pignan, who has been manager of the Paliiatua gasworks for tiie last fourteen months, is returning shortly to Auckland. He will be succeeded by Mr Wallser, who was recently engaged by Messrs Atkinson in the establishment of municipal gasworks at Eltham.
The Rev. J. W. Burton, formerly of Masterton, is spending a week in the baekblacks of North Taranaki, where he has gone as the deputy of the chairman. of the Methodist district to report on the work of the church in that locality. ,
