It is stated here that the Canadian Government has purchased the cruiser Aboukir.

The Abnukir is a. twin-cscrew armoured cruiser of 12,000 tons displacement, attached to the Sixth Cruiser Squadron in the Mediterranean. She was completed in 1902 at a cost of £751,118.

Mr Birrell (Chief Secretary for Ireland) was elected Lord Rector of jjrlasgow University, defeating Lord Charles Beresford, M.P.

Mr Andrew Carnegie was elected Lord Rector of Aberdeen University unopposed.

SIR REDVERS BULLER

MEMORIAL UNVEILED IN 'WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL.

There was a great gathering in Winchester Cathedral when a recumbent bronze figure of the late General Sir Redvers Buller, by..the Australian, sculptor, Bertram Maekennal, was unveiled by General Lord Grenfell.

The late Sir Redvers Builer \ras born in Devonshire, in 1839. He saw much service, and had it great reputation as a fighter. In 1899 be was Commander-in-Chief of the British. forces in South Africa, being superceded in that position by Lord Roberts. Sir Redvers resigned from the Army in 1901. He died on June 2nd, 1908, at the age of sixty-eight years.
