THE COUNTY ELECTIONS.

It is satisfactory to find that considerable interest is being manifested in the County Council elections which take place next week. This is a healthy sign. Although the process of multiplication has been going on ever since the present political party [ commenced to pander for votes, and the cost of local government has been enormously increased, there is still much useful work to be done in our (bounties, and it is desirable that the best men available should be selected for the position of Councillors. When the Opposition- assumes the reins of office—as it may do after the coming polls—the whole system of local government will be reviewed, and the responsibilities of Councillors will then be increased. In the meantime it is well that our best material should be moulded for future possibilities.
