xne -wairarapa f. and A. Society is pursued with the hardest of luck. Its thirty-fourth annual show opened, on "the ssplendidly-appointted grounds at Oarterton'yesterday, under con dictions which would have rediuced the spirit,of a less courageous Committee than that which controls its destinies to a point somewhere below aero.- The rain not only descended alike upon .-.e just and the unjust. It literally "poured betimes, as if to iest the -temper as well as the wearing apparel of the people. But ev-, ej^h^dy...see med ,more f #r^e*s&.*hja*»y ); ,, • and the omeiais aiid judges fa6e<f the jpbsiiiioii; ;witb; a .phih^ophy. wihie^..jwas r simply f7^ouiJrkablei; ; -S 3fte' .grptthdS l iibeeii .' considerably,.improved; since the last annual show. The oval has been extended; new pens have .fceen^i^yjdjj^ quarters have been found for the canine competitors; and the general arrangements? have been, added to and, perfected. The energetic secretary (Mr H. S. Moss), although just recovering from a dose of the prjeyailing jepidemic, was full of courtesy; and his staff was as obliging as I ever. The President (Mr W. Howard Booth ), mounted! on. a well-groomed charger, exercised a careful vision over/.the outside arrangemeriTS;; The stewards (fortified with oilskus) were at their posts to a man, and the genial M.r G. W. Deller, witho.it whom the Carterton show would bt incomplete^ ! provided a-' luncheon which did him. infinite credit. A publican's booth appeared to, be affoixlihg shelter as well as comfort to those;wh.o desired s a uniform! wetness, whilst the refreshment /- > nd lollie stalls were full—of expectation for the morrow.- Three .constables 'lent their patronage to the grandstand, and sui'veyed their surroundings with apparent equanimity. Ihe side shows—which are numerous and varied—were pitching their tents as well as stories of the marvellous entertainment they were going to produce next day. There was, in the circumstances, a ' good attendance of quite a few ladies showed their'pluck by patronising the stands. The Agricultural. Hal', w-as a centre of attraction v Her© is •t'> ibe found the ocuiar demonstratioa of what tlie cows and the soil and the farmers and their wives can d». The Agricultural Department has an attractive show of curiosities which interest as well as instructive man upon the lan<i. Two tables <xtei'dmg from one. end of the hall to thw other are groaning beneath their burden of butter and cheese—r-the latter preponderating—- and other products of- the soil.' A better show of cheese has probably never been made in the diotract, and the jiidges (Messr* Cuddie, Singleton and. Gra--liam; had no easy task in allotting the prizes. - The home industries/sec-' tiion is q' feature of the show. The bointsmade bread, 'and scones, and cakes i and " 'confections generally, wero enough to make" an Egyiptfan mumiwy feel hungry. The lady judge 'from Wellington was-quite sincere When she wrote in her judging .oooK, "Povfessional bakers will have to look to their' laurels." The display of fancv work and sewing is also exceedingly creditakie, whilst the uams, and Ibacon, and other farm, products are well up to the average in quality as well as quantity. 11l the section for cereals there was keen competition. Most of the prizes fell to the W.F.C.A., Messrs Ohaimberlain and Son, andiMi- G.'H. Peary. In future y<*u"S the Society, will probably see the) advisability of having it ( wo classes in this division—one for farmers .and the. other, for merchants' and professionals. The show of oats, .wheat, Ivrley and maize is probably one of the best ever made' in the 'North Isla'.i.i. .

LOAN AND MKROAiNWLE CO.

The New Zealand Loan and Morcanltil* Company has a. very compact and attractive stand in theAgriculrtmra'. Hall. Here may he seen samples of MeDbtigall's and Mutton's Dips (for which the Company are agents), rnianures, grass seeds, cattle deiierners, potato blight specifics, etc. Nod tlit* least imjporitant item, on the stand .are some specimens of woolpacks. with the smooth, side inward, which, provides greater security against the "fibre in wool" complaints which have been so.caramon of date.

THE W.F.C'.A

The Carterton branch of die "W F C A. is as usual to the fore with an exhibition of its comprehensive stock of farmers' requisites and sundries The Association was awarded first prizes for its Spring Tuscan.
