HER LOYALTV UPHELD SPEECH BY EARL GREY
(Received Last Night, 11 o'clock.)
LONDON, October 25
Earl Grey was banquetted at the Colonial Institute. Mr L Harcouro presided. Earl Grey, in responding, said that with the exception of. an occasional crank) it was impossible to find an annexationist throughout Canada, which w-as destined to become the strong part of the Empire before the close of the present century. Sir Wilfrid Lanrier's policy was to find extended markets for . America, but in no sense a policy of disloyalty to closer connection with the Motherland. The people scented a possible danger to independence and out-voted the policy, .however advehtageous. The .material. interests are in no f ac,t so clear as the determination, of'.Cfttj--ada to work out its salvation .under, the Union Jack. It was the magnetic clutch of common ideals, interests and aspirations that.kept the Empire indivisable, but the interests of the Empire need, before long, some form of organic union to prevent the magnetic clutch weakening. He urged the bringing of the overseas dominions closer by cheapened transportation and lower cable rates.
