THE TAUPO RAILWAY.
The Taupo Totara Timber Company lias failed, for the time being, in itsattempt to mop up several hundred thousand acre* of Native land, and to create a goodwill in a railway which would cost the country thousands of pounds to redeem. 1 lie ■scheme, altogether, lias .been one of the 'boldest that lias been projected upon the State' for some time. It is almost a wonder that a Government which oould see no harm, in the Mokau transaction, should look with disfavour upon a project which is alike in principle. But even Liberal Ministers find it convenient, on the eve of an election, to stay their, hand.
