THE LOAVES AND FISHES.

Some of the local bodies in New Zealand are quite astounded at the liberality of the Minister for Public Works this session. The way in which the money is being lavished in grants for roao,s is . almost without precedent, even in election years. This would indicate as much a scare in the Ministerial ranks as it does a sublime confidence in the credulity of the- people. In one portion of the Wairarapa, a local .body had asked for a vote .some time back, and had ibeen promised a pound for pound subsidy. The County Council is astonished to- find that the full vote has .been made, and that the ratepayers have not to find a penny—excepting through the consolidated revenue.
