OPENED AT PALMERS-TON. i PAIjMERSTOi\N., Last Night. The election campaign was opened her© .to-night, when Mr Wm. Thompson, Independent Oppositionist, addressed the electors. He claimed that , the old Tory Party was done with, but said there were. kinds, of Liberals,' adding that if Air Seddon could spend one day in New Zealand tt-day he would spend, it in denoun-cing-wOiat his successor had done. He attacked the Magistracy, claiming ■that it was dependent on the- will of id**.: denounced the Defence scheme as conscription, and i said that before very long it would bo costing the country a million. He claimed that while ive were building forts we had not a gain in the country that would fire three or four ttiles. He opposed prohibition, but said the time was coming when they would drive tied houses and .breweirs' nionopoly out of the country, and "bring in a Fair Hent Bill to apply to j hotels. On the Education question I he advocated 1 full tuition, primary, 1 secondary, and University. At the conclusion the candidate was accorded a vote of thanks. l
