REPLIES TO QUESTIONS.
IN HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
By Telegraph—Frets Association.
WELLINGTON, Last Night.; In reply to questions in the House of Representatives this afternoon, Ministers stated that Sir John Findlay's opinions, expressed in. Auckland in connectionwitft the Native representation in the House, duties of citizenship and use of their lands, were his own private views, expressed in his capacity as a candidate. The Government's attention had heen drawn to one case of evasion ox tKo law imder the Commercial Trusts Act, and the case was being inquired into. The question of the substitution of commercial geography for French in th .< syllahus under the Oivil Service examination regulations had been carefully considered, and no reason had .been seen for a,~ change. The statement that the' rremier had "squandered money,, ir hiring a whole ship to come from I'iigland in," was "an impertinent ; fabrication, and absolutely untrue.?'" J. 1 - was proposed to go into the whole,; question of the constitution of tlie' Court of Arbitration dxiring- the next recess. The Government was always ready to assist local bodies iii giving every facility to consider the question of electrical or any other method of. traction. The question of subsidising the construction of a. tram line to foe electrically operated was worthy of consideration, but until, ttie Government develops some huge force of hydro-electrical power for transmission to a suitahle locality it was doubtful whether it would be profitable for local bodies to .undertake the construction of small schemes with a viciy to olectric traction on ligh. tramways.
