FRUIT-CROWING.
In his inaugural address at the Australasian Fruit-growers' Conference h\ Brisbane, tQie Governor, Sir William Miacgregor, made some observations that are of interest to New Zealand orohardists, as well as those of the Commonwealth. Speaking as one who knew something of physiology, he said one could not but regret that in Australasia, as in all civilised countries outside the Uniteo Kingdom,, public policy made it difficult or impossible to- give first consideration to food'. The subject was one of great importance in every country, but nowhere was it of so vast importance as in Australia, on account of tftie large variety or temperature and soil. Canada sent 56 times more, and the United States 50 times more, apples to the United Kingdom than did the Commonwealth. Australians ate more meat than was good for them, consequently less fruit than would be advantageous. He had been struck with the large number of cases of rheumatism in hospitals. The cause was attributed to too much moat-eating, ah more than lOoz. to 12oz. clpgged the human machinery. The argu-ment-was-all in.favour of more fruit and vegetables.
