THE MOKAU CASE.

EXPLANATION BY MR MASSEY.

By Telegraph—Press Association.

WELLINGTON, Last Night. Tlio Mokau Committee met this morning. Sir J-as. Carroll asked Mr Massey to explain his reference at Levin:— "That what had .been sold had been the right to exploit settlers, and it -was done by virtue of a wretched Gittle provision which had been slipped into the Native Land Act to permit of an .Order-in-Oouncil. This was the sort of thing tthat was- happening." Sir James Carroll tliought it only fair fbo the Government that this question should be asked, as the paragraph directly charged the Government with having specially designed this clause. iMr Massey denied having said so; but he stated that when the head of ,th<- Department rwas examined lie asked the question whether the clause in .question was designed to 'meet this case, and the witness -said "No." Mr 'Massey, however, isaid ithiat in his opinion the power was one which should not be there. He .himself waj away from the House wlien the clause was. inserted, but lanyway it was cusitomary to leave Native Bills to the Native Committee, and he would probably not have noticed it. * This was all the evidence taken.
