LABOUR COMMISSION
INTERIM REPORT
IN NEW SOUTH WALES ASSEMBLY. (Received Last Night, 9.15 o'clock.) SYDNEY, October 10. An interim report of the Labour Commission tabled in tihe Assembly states that although both sides admitted that a shortage existed it was early apparent that there was an abundance of unskilled labour available, except navvies for railway construction. There does, however, exist a great and permanent- need for the introduction of skilled workers owing to such not taking the. risk of coming unless they are guaranteed work. The report details, seriatim,, the trades affected by the inquiry. It refers only to those connected with which evidence "was tendered. The Commissioner found, that the. introduction of new skilled labour would result in a great increase in general body work and the attainment of the stability of the industries. One apparent aspect in connection with, the scarcity of labour is that the people alt-eady here are unable to get house' accommodation. After reviewing in detail a. large numbefof " industries,* tflie report slims upi the actual immediate requirements of ■ skilled labour as 3247.
The inquiry was opened on June 11, and is still sitting.
