The International Ballon Race was a failure, so far as distance is concerned, seven of the nine * starters being compelled tp land, owing to bad weather, after having covered distances of less than five hundred miles. The French and German representatives are still in the air.

DESTRUCTIVE FIRE. CHURCH AND FACTORIES DESTROYED. (Received October 7, 8.5 a.m.) LONDON, October 6. A fire at Leicester destroyed St. George's Church and six-storied factories covering a space of 320 ft by 300 ft. The damage is estimated at £IOO,OOO. A Harvest Thanksgiving Sex-vice was being held in the Church at the time, and there was a crowded congregation. The worshippers, however, dispersed without any signs of panic.
