PAYMENT OF MEMBERS.

A rumour is current that an effort i* to ibe made this session to increase the honoraria of .members" of the House of (Representatives from £3OO to £4OO per year. There can be little doubt that, as things go, a payment of £3OO per year is altogether inadequate. It is not a "living wage," and it keeps th nose of the poor .but honest politician to., the grindstone. It would be much, better for the country that legislators should be given a decent remuneration for their services, than that they should Ibe compelled to resort to practices of "graft" in order that they might live.
