The demands of the Seamen's Union form the chief topic in local shipping circles, and the position is said to be serious.—so serious, indeed, that some people go as far as to say that there might be a maritime strike, involving all Australasia. That, however, may be an extreme view, as' the claims have not yet even been discussed by the representatives of the opposite parties in conference. Whatever tflie result may oe, the opinion is prevalent that the public cannot carry a much heavier burden in the form of increased passenger or freight rates:
