Mr P.; Hally, Conciliation Commissioner, was in Masterton: yesterday. Mr A. G. Wise, of tie staff of the Dominion, and formerly of Masterton, was a visitor to Masterton yesterday. Mi - A. W. Hogg, M.P., was granted another week's leave of absence from his Parliamentary duties on Wednesday. Among recent callers'at the office of the High Commissioner ; in. London were Mr and Mrs John Strang and Mrs W. Cooper, of x Masterton. Messrs G. R. Sykea and! A. H. Herbert, candidates for the Masterton seat, were both present at the Solway picnic yesterday.
The Bishop of Waiapu (Dr. A. W. ,Averill) and< Mrs Averill -intend paying a visit to the Old Country next year, and will leave Napier about the middle of February.
Mr R. J. Oswald, representing the Carroll Dramatic Company, is at present in Masterton, making arrangements for the appearance of his Company in this town on October 11th. 'Suppliers to the Hukanui creamery are tendering a'social and dance to Mr A. McFarlane, Chairman of -the Ballance Dairy Co., in the Hukanui Hall on October IftJil;' • A Nelson Press Association telegram states that the Waimea, County Council yesterday appointed Mr J; S., Whiteside, of Opotiki, to the position of County Engineer. It is officially announced that Lieut. Col. J.'T. Burnett Stuart, D.C.0., of the Imperial General Staff, has assumed command of the Canterbury Military District as from October 2nd, in succession to the late Colonel Hawkins, V.D. The death occurred at Palmersfon North yesterday of Mr James Sherman, one of the pioneers of the M'anawatu district. The deceased gentleman arriVcd in New Zealand in the ship Himalaya in 1876 and settled in the Manawatu district. He was prominently connected with the early history of the dairy industry, and established the first cheese factory in the district at his propprty at Silverleys. - .
A Sydney cable states tiliat Mr H. N. Holmes! late Secretary of the Wellington branch of the Y.M.0.A., has arranged for Sir John Kirk to visit the various cities in New Zealand early in. December.
