Ring, of the Waikato, a young New Zealander, just returned after studying veterinary surgery at tlie University of Pennsylvania, whose degree V.M.D. (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) he now Jiokls The American dairyman istall feeds Ais cattle, 90 lie cannot afford to have any inferior animals in the herd. He goes in for the purebred—Jerseys, Guernseys, Holsteins, and Ayrshires being the principal breeds- favoured. The grade animal he finds does not pay. Pure milk, or "certified milk," as it is hest known in the States, is milk from cows that have hee>n certified free from, tuberculosis. The system of weeding out has resulted in the gathering together of some magnificent .herds, and some of the individual yields are phenomenal. The management of live stock is in the hands of a State Department called the Live Stock Sanitary Board, which controls among other things the breeding of stock, issuing certificates to such sires as are considered sound after an examination by a State veterinary surgeon. Three grades of certificates are issued, and though horses not certificated are not prohibited, breeders now naturally look to the horses that carry the imprimatur of the State Denavtment.
