THE PONGAROA RAILWAY.
Thf= following, 'from the pen of Mr T. K. Dow, a well-known writer of Australia, is respectfully dedicated to the Hon. R. McKenzie, who recently stated that a railway conld aiot he made to Pongaroa until there was more settlement: — "Settlers ask for a railway, and they are expected to show that they already produce sufficient wheat, wool, or live stock to make a railway pay before they can claim coaiisideration. It is as if the plough makers refused to make ploughs, until the farmers, had cultivated their land. That this benighted policy still rules, in the States is as sun>rising as it ,is obstructive.. Its general acceptance was only emphasised the other day when a State Minister promised to introduce a revolutionary change. He snid he would propose the ma.king of limesi in advance of (settlement. He would, in •fact, depart from the accepted policy of putting the cart before the horse."
