EAST COAST RAILWAY.
A deputation, from .Napier asked Sir Joseph Ward this week to place a sum of money upon the -Estimates tocommence the construction of the East Coast railway northward from Napier. The Prime Minister, though obviously n a bad temper, told the deputation that arrangements were •being made for a start from this end of the line. So far as it goes, this is satisfactory, though the expending of money in putting a line. through country which is occupied by large holders does not fit in with the declared policy of the Minister for Public Works. Unless the Wellington merchants desire to see the whole of the East Coast trade diverted to Auckla.nd, they should take prompt measures to see that the ißlimutaika (railway deviation/ lis made one of the urgent public, works of the future.
