EXPLOSION IN A COLLIERY
LOSS OF LIFE

LONDON, September 17
An explosion at the Owmamman Colliery, Wales, entombed one hundred men.
Two were killed, and four are in a precarious .state. The rest- were rescued.

The Daily Telegraph says that after Lady Medallist's display on Saturday, at Rose-hill, it is reasonable to suppose that the public will hear no more about her being an unlikely starter for the Epsom Handicap.
MURDER OF A MISSIONARY
MR DANIELS KILLED BECAUSE A WHITE.

SYDNEY, September 18
A member of the Evangelical Mission, who has returned from the Solomons, states that the recent murder of the missioner, Mr Daniels, at Malaita, was not the outcome of his interference with native customs, but because ho was a European. A price has been placed upon the heads of the whites, and every native is paid for killing them.
AUSTRALIAN QUARANTINE ACT
EXEMPTIONS

MELBOURNE, Sept. 18
Vessels trading between New Zealand and Australia, excepting passenger boats, are to be exempted from the provisions of the Quarantine Act, provided they are not from a proclaimed port. This has been done to enable trading vessels to make Australian ports the first port of call.
ASSAILANT OF A TEACHER
ALLEGED TO BE A NOTED CRIMINAL. (Received September 18, 10 a.m.) OTTAWA, September 17. Edward Davis, the alleged assailant of the Manitoba sehoql teacher (Miss Brice) was arrested at Hannah, North Dakota. He is alleged to be a noted convict. Davis escaped from prison years ago, when he killed several guards.
(A cable message received a few days ago stated: —The disappearance pf a school teacher named Miss Brice, a relation of the Premier. (Mr Roblin). of Manitoba, -tarted a hue. and cry along the trail left by the supposed murdered from the schoolhouse to a gully a mile distant. The body was not found, although 1 the whole neighbourhood participated in the search. The girl was found later wandering on the prairie. She had been captured by a ruffian and kept .all night upon the prairie, being beaten repeatedly. The ruffian escaped. If found he will probably be lynched.)
IRISH RAILWAYS. GENERAL STOPPAGE THREATENED.

LONDON, September 18. A general railway stoppage in Ireland is threatened.
.The porters have struck at Umerick, and troops are held in readiness at Dublin.

PROTECTING THEIR INTERESTS

LONDON, September 18: The Scotch steel makers have initiated a scheme to combat Continental compensation in the British markets. They offer a rebate of five shillings per ton, payable half yearly, provided the customer coufines his dealings with associated makers.
English makers are considering similar action. '

VIENNA, September 18,
The seismograph at Laibacs .recorded a great earthquake on Sunday, five thousand miles distant.

AN ENGLISHMAN KILLED

LONDON, September 18. Mr Gammel, while trying the War Office's new Valkyrie monoplane made the first circuit safely, but while volplaning the machine tilted and crashed to the earth'. Cammel was terribly injured, and died immediately.
