PRISONERS SENTENCED.
WELLINGTON, Yesterday. At the Supreme Court yesterday, John Scott, aged 61, was charged with falsifying a cash book belonging to the Wellington Meat Export Co., the indictment including a number of charges. He was sentenced by the CMef.. Justice to nine months' imprisonment. . ■ ' '' Counsel, in pleading for leniency, ..sjwd accused's charaotes had' hitherto been steinles®, and he had been; a dutiful citizen. He was married, and hlad four children. In 1902 he hlad a salary of £SOO, butt as a result of retrenchment it was reduced in 1906 to £3OO. Accused .was unable to out down has standard of living, and his troubles commenced. N A young mian named Wtilson, alias Taylor, on a charge of false pretences, wias ordered to be sent to La-vercaa-giili for reformative treatment.
TRAMWAY EMPLOYEES' REQUEST.

Ait a meeting of the Tramway Employees' Union, the delegates to the Trades Council were instructed to ask thfe Council to approach the Government with a view to having a clause inserted fin the Tramtways Act, making it impossible to have such, a system, asi the "Demerit system," as ift' is ktoiown in Canterbury, in particular applicable to any pubEc service in the Dominion. Mr J. Young, secretary of the Tramiway Employees' Union, wlho left for Wellington last night, was instructed to interview the miemibers of the FederaJtion there .asking their co-operation in obtaining an awlard for the whole of tine Dominion.
MOTOR LAUNCH SWAMPED.
CHRISTCHUECH, Last Night. ; The motor launch "Ifingfishier," owned by Messrs Beswriek Bros., was swamped on the Summer bar yesterday. The launch Was taken round! ifironi LyMellton on Friday, but thte baa- was dangerous, and She returned to port yesterday morning. SibJe appeared! again off Sumner, evidently with the intention of going across the bar. A strong northwester was raising a big roll, and the signals were against her, while tibie pilot endeavoured to mlake it dear that a crossing would be extremely pralaus; but t!he crew decided to take the bar, and stood in when she was fairly, in the roll. A blig wave curved over her, stopping, the em'gine. The- crew castt anchor, and (the Sumner lifeboat was promptly manned and put off, and thie crew were taken ashore with some little trouble. The launch had to foe left ait anchor, and! yesterday aitennotom she was juslfc floating. It was thought probaWe that when- the tide went dow« she -would bramp: heavily, and thtat .she might easily he wrecked'.
OLD MAN FOUND DEAD.
CHRISfrceUBJOH, Last Night
George Ruddock, aibbut seventy years of age, was found dead in his gardlen at Sefton on Friday night. He had been dead for about a week. There were aio marks of violence on him.
