Sir, —It is unusual, no doubt, for imp 'to write you re matersi of current interest before Parfament. We are lalft 1 , (however, snecesasriUy m'ore or Des-s interested in the Financial Statement, and in looking through Itfflie Budget I noltice on page 17 (under the heading of Agriculture) the following:— "The Government is taking into consideration tihe question of iturning into profitable account thle the waste products from our butter and cheese factories. The result of this will ibe an increased! revenue to the dlairy farmers ol the' Dominion. Now, it -has ofiten occurred to me- iaa onily reasonable tli'at more could' and should be done- in thisiway. When one knows .tihe hligh state of perfdtion already attained in turning to prontabfe account practicaly every —what might ibe itermed : •waste product in connexion with the fruit growing and 1 canning factory, etc., resulting to' the great amultual -benefit of growers, and consumers:; one cannot help thanking that a. wide lamd important fisakl in connection with the better utili station of the waste products of the dairies of the Dominion still- re•mainis pradticaHjy overlooked. Or a-t any rate ibut ilittle developed:. When one rememubens how vast and imjpor- j tant 3ilave become such industries as , oondmsed and; dried .mik, for, in- \ stance, and to .what extent even still these. .iartiokHß of icMly consumption/ imported, it isurely seem® worth whSle flor a. Government /which has done soinwich to help- home industries in othter directions, to take this matter up isieiuously wii'th a view to seeing what can he done to develop afong thle dines referred to, and to assist lany who may be found willing it© enter upon the manufacture of ; such articles iof consumption as may be siatisifactorily and profitably produced from waste dlairy products (not only (too +a*u]y, to all intents and purposes really "waste.") I know attempts have ben made; also that something bias- ben done; and also. that there »re. difficulties to be overcome. But it is not wtorth a special effort, and doesi not this reference in the Budget mate the time specially oportuue to see- what further can he dbne in the direction indicated.
