WAIPOUA BRIDGES
COUNTY COUNCIL'S DECISION. At yesterday's meeting of the Masterton County Council a letter was received from the Town Clerk forwarding a copy of the resolution passed *>y the Borough Council with regard to the bridges over the Waipoua river at the uorthern approach to the town. The Chairman stated that he had consulted the Engineer with regard to the suspension of work on the bridge, and they had decided against a cessation. The Chairman's action was confirmed. Cr. Foreman said that he was, opposed to making any alterations. The late Borough Engineer (Mr W. T. Mansfield), acting under instructions, han inspected the plans and was wet! aware of the position of the bridge. He moved that the work be completed according to the plans and specifications, and that if the Borough Council require any alteration they undertake the work at their expense. Cr. Kebble agreed with the previous speaker. He added that it seemed incredible that the Borough should wait till this late hour before raising their objections. He did not think the bridge, was out of place. If it had been put in the centre of Queen Street it would not have been in the centre from the approach. The chairman failed to see that the bridge was in the right position. Ho stated that he considered the only way in which the Engineer had erred was in failing to draw attention to. the position of the bridge. He said he was in favour of extending the bridge, but he was apparently alone on this question. •■-.■-■ Cr Murray did not think the valua of any adjoining property had been depreciated. He was rather inclined to believe that the value had been enhanced. The motion was carried without further discussion. Cr. Foreman stated that he hoped it would be understood that this was the County Council's final decision. It was also resolved to request the Borough Council to proceed immediately with the formation of the road adjoining the south end of the bridge, failing which the County Engineer will commence operations. This action is necessary as the contractor is ready to dismantle the old bridge.
