MAORI POPULATION
LEAVING THE BUSH. Some interesting remarks on the condition of the Maoris resident in this district are (say® the Pahiatua Herald) made by Mr E. A. Welch, who at the recent Maori census acted as enumerator for the counties of Wairarapa South, Mauricevule, Eketahawia, Pahiatua, Akitio, Caigtlepoint, Mafiterton and Fealthersitom. The returns show an intarease of fifteen in the total population of tile "eight counties., as oomtpiaired with the number shown in the census of 1906, the figures being 880, as agaimsHj 865. One noticeable feature in the increase in the number of children under fiffteen years of age, the figures being— for 1911, 358; for 1906, 324; an increase of thirtyfouir. The increases in the total population for these counties would have been greater but for the fact that many of the natives 1 in the Pahiatua district have left here, and h!ave taken up their abode in Dannevdrke and Hawke'ts Bay.
