VIGILANCE IN THE SOUTH.
PORTS CLOSELY WATCHED,
By Telearavh — Prats Association.
CHRISTCHUROH, Last Night,
There is always a possibility that ! the escaped prisoner Pawelka- may manage to elucte the police in the North Island. Various steamers and other craft trade from the ■ different ports in the North to as many ports in the South, and it is conceivable that Pawelka may secure a passage. All ports in the North are being closely watched and Southern ports are under a similar surveillance. Intimation of the escape was telegraphed to every police station in Ne»v Zealand, and every officer has been keep a sharp . 'look-out for the escapee.' The local police are at a loss to account for the facility with which Bjawelka escaped from the Terrace Gaol. One officer .said that the modern feejdng against the adoption of stern precautionary dealing with notorious escapees night have something to do with it. I No doubt Pawelka could be made amply secure; but the public would not toWate the thought of a prisoner languishing in prison in chains. v ' At one time the public were not so tender-hearted, as he had himself seen prisoners parading the Wellington streets with leg-irons on. He did not know whether leg-irons were still in use in prisons, but he had not seen them in public for many years. A prisoner like Pawelka. if he was to be kept .safely in custody, seemed to require more than the ordinary measure of surveillance.
