Particulars of thirty performances m publio were also enclosed. Cr Ewirngtan' imovied that .the grant to the 'Band be increased to £2O. He said that the Band was quite warranted to apply to. the Council. They were evidently helping themselves., .and (the Council would not be placing money in a <conoern, that was likely to fail. It was the least the Council could do on behalf of the citizens. Or Donald seconded rthe motion, and in' doing so stated .that after seeimg that the. Band was ia a fairly good position' he. was prepared (to 'support it. The speaker said he was one of those who would' like to see only one band in this itowm, but he was satisfied that the South Band was an institution' established mainly Ito assist the young men in .that portion' of (the towin/apd (he thought the Council ought to encourage; institutions, that, helped to fill. in< the idle/hours of ~young iaenT *' ' Or Hoar said that ho .was Ithe Councillor who asiked ; ifix rfehe fiinan>oial report, and" !he .expressed himself as more than; satisfied. with it, because he had understood from Or Morris, one. of the deputation which waited' on the Council, that .they were .in a very bad position. He was prepared to support the grantiag of £2O.

Cr Candy sa|d there' was already one band m the town', and it was qud'be 'Sufficient. He did,not isee the use of spending money on two isieoond 'olass bands. He suggested that a ioonfienen.ee be held between' nepre(semtatives of both ibands to see if isoide anraoiigemenit iwith regard to amalgamation could be arrived at. The Council might then he wed advised 'to assist to the extant of £SO. Otherwise the South Band should appeal to the public. He himsefl would he prepared to subscribe. Cr O'Leary did not agree iwith Or Candy. He said that if there- was only one band the interest might not :be riso great. . While thene were two bands the competrittaon. emoouraged. the jnomibera. . -

Cr Temple said he could mot support the motion. He did: mot think it would be fair to make an extra grant to one band and mot the other.

Or Braigniell was of the isame opinion as Or Temple'. The Mayor was not fin' favour of increasing the grant on the .same ground. Cr EHdotlfc ©aid the gran/tang to one band and not the other was the great feature of 'the quesrtiion. Tine Mayor said, regarding /the suggestion' that it would be helping the young imteni, (that the youaig men of Masitierton were treated very weOi and it was (time they did isomethinig for themselves.

Or Ewington, in replying to the discussion', said an amalgamation was unlikely. If such a. gibing did' happen there was-a- probability of another hand forming. With regard to the Mayor's suggestion/ that the young mem should help (themselves, Or Ewington said that they had done everything Sat their power, and made great (Sacrifices, hut had (failed. He 'had no objection' to moving that a 'similar grant be made to the Municipal Band if rthiey could show as good a case. The motioni was lostf! by 5 rotes to 4. Or Donald said that if Cr Candy would open a subscriptioni list with, a donation of £1 he would also add' .a similar amount.
