Mr JVC. Bidwill, of Featherston, will be the only representative of the Wairarapa at the Manawatu golf tournament, which opens to-morrow, Mr W. Murdoch, formerly of Eketahuna, who had announced his intention of contesting the Otakiseat iu the Labour interest, has decided uob to do so. Word has reached Eketahuna of die death at Waimarino of the wife of Mr J. Basset, junr., a former resident of the Forty-Mile Bush.' Mr S. Bolton, Chairman of the Pahiatua County Council, has been elected honorary auditor of the New Zealand Counties Association.
Mr J. C. Ewington has been unanimously re-elected Chairman of Directors of the Masterton Co-operative Dairy Company, Ltd. Mr and Mrs J. F-. Quinn, who are teaving for Pahiatua, were entertained'at a monster social at Eketahuna on Friday night. The Mayor presided," and presented each of the departing guests with a souvenir. Mr C. Cox, son of Mr E. C. Cox, of Pahiatua, who is in the employ of -/he Railway Department at Wellington, proceedls to Sydney shortly to ; continue his studies in electricity. Mr and Mrs Fissendin, who are leaving Akitio, were, entertained at a sooial and dance prior to' their depar--1 ture. Mrs Fissenden was presented was a gold watch and chain, and Mr Fissenden with a purse of sovereigud.
At Saturday's meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council a cable was read from Mr John announcing his safe arrival in London on August 24th. J Mr Strang left Wellington on July 13th.
Mr C. Arnold, who has been buye;' in the Wairarapa for Messrs Dimock and Co. for some time, has been transr ferred to:the'HaWera district.will be sjucoeeded by Mr A. Abbott, formerly of the Carterton bacon factory. ■ ;'.'■ ■■-... • A valedictory social was tendered on Friday night by the members of the Pahiatua Literary 'and Debating Society to Messrs A. H. Dallaston and E.. L.. Jones, both leading members of the Society, who are leaving the district. v
As showing the confidence reposed in Mr J. C. Ewington, Chairman of Directors of tihe Masterton Co-opera-tive Dairy Company, it may be mentioned that in the election of directors,, held at the anmial meeting on Saturday, Mr Ewington received a vote from every shareholder present or re-pro-ented at the meeting. The death occurred at Masterton on Sp ' - last of Mrs Wellington, wif \of Mr John Wellington', an '>ld and respected settler of this district. Mr. and Mrs WelHngton-left London and arrived in.New Zealand in 1871, and have resided here iffier- since. They have brought ur> a family of five eons and; three daughters. The sons are Thomas Udy, Foster. .William T.. H. 6., arid Oscar Wellington,, and the daughters; Mrs C. Wrigley, Mrs W. H. Judd, and Miss E. G, Wellington, all resident in Masterton. One other son was drowned just nine years ago. The late.Mrs'Wellington was a native of Cornwall. The funeral takes place this afternoon.
