WELLINGTON, Last Night. The Legislative Council meit at 2.30 p.m.
ENCOURAGING IMMIGRATION.
Sir Maurice O'Rorke moved, ''That | the Council is of opinion that it is [ desirable that the Govemiment should' appoint am immigration officer in Ireland 1 and another in, iScotland, to facilitate immigration from ■those countries', and that each immigrant of 21 yeans, .of age should receive 40 acres of freeihold land in New Zealand."
The Hon,. C. M. Lube, while not agreeing witlh ,the whole motion,, took occasion to emphasise ttibe importance of a more vigorous immigration, publio -works, and land settlemnet policy. This country should' have a. fax larger number of isettlers on its land than: it has*.
Whs Hon, W. W. McOardilie urged tihe neoeisisdity for closer 'settlement, (but objected to the' proposal to give Mock® of land away. The Hon. 'Mr CaUlan said the scheme wias impracticable. If the free permit portion- was left out, he wouM vote for rtfhe amotion, for he agreed with the importance of immigration. The Hon. Mr Besihian expressed similar views.
The, Hon. «T. MoGowan opposed the motion, which was 'lost on the voice*.
