A WORLD'S CHAMPIONSHIP
HOLWAY DEFEATS TREMBATH

SYDNEY, August 22
In the World's Quarter-Mile Cham-pion-hip, run to-day, Hohvay defeated Trembath by five yards in 50 4-5 sees.
Trembath was the quicker to start. Holway waited upon him at half distance, but then shot to the front, and won comfort-ably. The ladies' hundred yards sprint championship of Australia was won by Miss Moore, who defeated the holder (Mrs Drennan) by five yards in 13 3-ssecs.

REPORTED OUTBREAK OF FIRE

ADEN, August 22. The Italian gunboat Volturno reports that an outbreak of fire has ocoured aboard the steamer Fifeshire, which recently went aground near the mouth of the Gulf of Aden.

THE FEDERAL REFERENDUM.

SYDNEY, August 22
A special Political Labour League Conference is being held, for the purpose of considering the attitude of members of Parliament who voted against, or abstained from voting for the Federal Referendum; also the question of the reconstruction of the Conference, with a view to reducing the number of delegates. It was decided to exclude the Press (with the exception of the accredited representatives of the Labour Press) from the Conference.
