LONDON, August 22,

I The Right Hon. H. H. Asquith met r Gip resen ta ti,v es of the Tramway Owners' Association and United Garters' Association, at Mam,cheater, ! ut the conference- was fruitless. A strike of four thousand carters 'at Sheffield, has 'been, settled on the iba:si.s of a .substantial, advance. The Strike- Committee has again 'called out Mi-e. rail.waymen, owing to the Midland -Railway trouble,. It is officially stated that the men are in a bad temper, and all will strike. The Tyne dockers remain out. Disturbances .have occurred a't Darlington. The railway me,n. at Liverpool have decided not to- resume unless the tramwaymen, who struck in sympathy with them, 'are reinstated. Owing to the tramwaym-en's* rtonreinstatement-, itlie Strike .Committee has- ordered the transport ' workers not to resume, including sailors, firemen and dockers 1 . An Executive Committee of Just-; ices at Liverpool has urged Mr Winston Churchill not to relax the police and. military precautions there. They protested against the methods of socalled. peaceful picketing, and expressed ithe hope that Parliament would not adjourn without conferring upon the Justices additional powers to prevent .intimidation, which has j heretofore been almost the -solo factor in preventing a universal settlement of existing disputes.
HIS MAJESTY'S CONGRATULATIONS.
COMPLETE SETTLEMENT IN VIEW.
(.Received Last Night, 10.50 o'clock.) LONDON, August 22. The King has telegraphed to the Hon. iD. Lloyd-George as follows: ' 'Very glad to hear that it was largely due to your energy and sikill that a .settlement is arranged. I heartily congratulato you, and feel, with the whole country, most grateful to you for averting a most disastrous calamity. The- strike caused me the greatest possible anxiety." His Majesty also telegraphed to the Right Hon. H. H. Asquith his congratulations. The King sent a message to the t-roops on strike duty. He commends tho forbearance and self-restraint showtn .by all ranks. The announcement was made at the .Board of Trade that the difficulties in 1 connection, .with Saturday's agreement, including the Midland railway men's trouble, are nearing settlement. The North-Eastern Railway Directors have decided to permit resumption on the basis of Saturday's .settlement. The announcement is generally welcomed at Leeds, but at York the men. have, a hostile feeling, being afraid that the forthcoming Commission's findings will enable the Company to abandon the existing conciliation., which the men consider the most effective in- .Britain. The rail way men at Hull, Middlesborough, Newcastle, and Darlington have deferred decision. Meanwhile they have redoufbled their pickets. The irailwayimen at. Hull demand an eight hours day and a two shillings increaise for l'ow grade men. The traffic at Newcastle is almost at a deadlock. Many citizens, including solicitors, heads of firms, and clerks acted as porters, at the central .station, a porter's ,cap being the only sr&miblian.ce of uniform. Mr Bellamy states that the railwayimen's unions have received the companies' guarantees respecting certain cases under discussion.
Ma.ny points have arisen-. • The .settlement is proceeding with [ considerably less, friction tlian was I expected. | All concerned are hopeful of an early and complete agreement. Five hundred Midland men. at the Kentiishtown goods station have struck.
