A SETTLEMENT AGREED UPON. STRIKERS NOT TO BE PUNISHED. Received This Morning, 12.30 o'clock. LONDON, August 20. The Board of Trade, at half-past eleven o'clock last night, issued a statement as follows: — "On the Government's representation, the Railway Companies empowered Messrs Claughton and Granet to. confer with representatives selected ly the Joint Executives of the Railwaymen's Trade Unions, with a view bo' discussing with them the Board of Trade's suggested terms of settlement.!
The conference met at the Board of Trade Office, and was attended bythe Companies and railwaymen's representatives, together with Messrs Lloyd-George, Buxton, Llewellyn, . Smith, Asquith, and Ramsay Macdonald. Mr Claughton stated that Mr Granet and he were authorised to meet the men's representatives .mider the special circumstances. He added that the suggested terms had been discussed and agreed to. Messrs Claughton and Granet further stated that the Commission's recommendations would be loyally accepted, even though adverse to the Companies' contention on any question of representation, and in tho event of a settlement any trace of ill will arising from the strike would certainly be effaced. After a prolonged discussion the following settlement was unanimously reached and signed:—
'The strike to be terminated forthwith; all involved in the striko or lockout applying within reasonable time to be reinstated at the earliest practicable moment; no proceedings to be taken for breach.of contract.' Tho Conciliation Board will be convened to set-tie the questions now hi djspute. If the Sectional Board fads to arrive at a settlement, the CentraBoard will meet immediately."
