f Advice was leceived by the English mail yesterday that Mr W. L. Falconer, of Masterton, arrived at Caithness, Scotland, after a pleasant trip Home.
Mr H. Finney, one of the proprietors 'of the NelVon "Colonist," is at present. 011 a visit to Masterton, with. Mrs Finney.
Mrs Broadbent, of Carterton, who was seized with a paralytic stroke on Saturday last, died on Sunday. The deceased lady was highly respected throughout the district. Or. Whittington has been appointed Mayor of Hawera, vice Mr Burton, resigned.
Mr Joseph Goodall, aged 73 years, died at Kaikoura last week. For many years he was a resident of that town. He was the first police officer, and afterwards was wharfinger and harbourmaster for many years. Latterly he has been in failing health. He was a brother-in-law to Mr J.- Duncan, M.P., his wife predeceasing him some years ago. He leaves a family of seven —three daughters and four sons. Mr Roderick Duncan Stewart, school inspector, has informed a Whangarei pressman that he has definitely decided to contest the Manakau seat in the Government \ir.torest at the coming general election.
Aii old and respected resident of Masterton, in the person of Mr J. H. La Roche, passed away at his residence in Cole Street, yesterday afternoon, at the age of 60 years. The deceased gentleman had been suffering From a severe illress for about five weeks, but the end came very suddenly. Five minutes before his death Mr La Roche was conscious and spokp to members of bis family. The late Mr La Roche caught a chill, which developed into pneumonia and other ; complications, and death resulted from the breaking of a vessel. It ,was forty-one years ago wlien Mr La Roche arived in Auckland. About Six r years later he Came to Masterton/ \Uier6 he was married in 1878, since \Vhen ho has resided in Cole street. The deceased gentleman was of 'a very retiring, nature, and was highly esteemed by all who knew him. Ho leaves a widow and grown up family to mourn their loss. The sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended, to the relatives.
Mr E. L. Jones, of Messrs L. T. Herbert and Co., has received an appointment as accountant to the Mutual Stores. Hamilton, and will leave Pahiatua in a fortnight to take up his new duties.
