POPULATION RETURNS.

SHRINKAGE IN THE COAST TOWNS.

(Received August 14, 8.35 a.m.), CAPETOWN, August 13. The census shows the population of the South African Union, including all races, to be 5,938,499. Europeans number 1,278,205, and natives 4,061,082. A feature of the returns is the shrinkage in the population of the coast towns, except Durban. Increases are shown at Johannesburg and Pretoria. There is a steady increase of natives and other coloured races.
