We regret to hew that Mrs Broadbent, senr., „of Carterton, was taken rather seriously ill on Saturday afternoon, and n^v,lies ; jn a precario.us ; .cwir dition. ' 'Mr ■W: Nosworthy, MX; of Ashburton, wab l a visitor to Masterton yesterday. He proceeds to Pahiatua with Mr Massey to-day. Mr,A. H. Herbert ton after his M&uHbeville; meeting: pn Saturday.' He was present at the .supper given the Leader of the Opposition on Saturday night, and,returned to Eketahuna last evening.
News has reached Masterton tliat it was Mr J. JV. Ranby, formerly a respected resident of this town, who met with such shocking injuries at Ohaupo last week that he has completely lost Ills eyesight. Latest advices showed that Mr Ranby was in the Hamilton Hospital, and was progressing as favourably as the frightful nature of his injuries would permit-. Mr Ranby, who is a brother-in-law of Mr G. Townsend, of Master- ' ton,' left Pahiatua for the Waikato about nine years ago. He has. a fann of 640 acres, and has been doing well. He has a family of ten* children, some of them old enough, fortunately," to be of service oh the farm.
Mr G. de S. Bailliss. of the Agricultural Department, attended the meeting of the Committee of the Masterton A. and P. Association on Saturday afternoon, and made arrangements to meet the Agricultural Committee on Wednesday next, to discuss matters in connection with the establishment of experimental plots- of peas and maize, and other things that might be suggested.
The funeral of the late Miss Annie Kathleen Montgomery took place yesterday afternoon. The whole of the staff of the Masterton Post Office, of which the late Miss Montgomery was. a member, joined in the cortege, which was a very lengthy one. Many friends paid their respect to the deceased by placing beautiful wreaths on the casket. An impressive burial service was conducted by the Rev. Father Harnett.
The death occurred at Pongaroa at midnight on Friday of the wife of Mr Thomas McKenzie, of Pongaroa. Tho deoeased lady, who is a daughter of. Mr Wm. Meach,. of Pongaroa, took ill on Wednesday last, and. the news of her demise came as a great shock to friends and relatives. She leaves a husband and five children to mourn their loss. The deceased lady was only 29 years of age.
