Mr J. C. Boddington reports thfit the frost registered at the Upper Plain on Saturday morning was 12 degrees. The, Worksop Dredge return for "\voek was 84ozs. 16dwts. ior 55 hours 1 work. Two days' during the week wero occupied in repairing buckets.
Mr W. F. Massey expressed the opinion to an Age representative on Saturday that the Masterton showground at Sol way- was the making of the best in New Zealand. "And," he added, "I have seen them all."
The Masterton Municipal Brass Band rendered a very enjoyable programme of sacred music in the Masterton Public Park yesterday afternoon. Quite a largo number of people took advantage of the beautiful weather and gathered to enjoy the selections.
Mr C. Gallon, of Dalefield, had the misfortune to, sustain a . fractured leg while playing for Dalefield in their football match at Carterton oh Saturday. It was due to the accidental crossing of legs with another player.
In deference to an expressed wish by a number of ladies at the cooking demonstration at Beale and Co.'s on Saturday, Mr Thompson announced that i fa sufficient number cared and a day could be arranged, Mrs Robertson, the demonstrator, will be glad to give a private lesson. This is being considered, and meantime if ladies who wish to avail themselves of the opportunity will send or leave their names at Messrs Beale and Co. 's, they will be notified privately as soon as the matter is decided.
Mr A. H. Herbert delivered an address in the Mauriceville West Public Hall on Saturday night, Mr J .P. Petersen occupying the chair. There were about fifty persons present, and the speaker received a good hearing. He dealt for an hour and a half on th-a political questions of the day, dealing trenchantly with the professional politician, 'who came up at every crack of the party whip. On the motion of Mr N. Neilsen, seconded by Mr Larson, Mr Herbert received a unanimous vote of thanks.

I Mr William Johnson, a married man, and a very old resident of Wellington, was found dead in bod on Saturday.
A single man, twenty-seven years of age, named Thomas Mummery, shot himself at Ashburton on Saturday. The vicarage of St. Peter's Church at Takapuna lias been destroyed by fire.
Mrs Andrews, a married woman, residing at Miiford Sound, Takapuna, was found drowned in a creek on Saturday morning.
At the meeting of the Eketahuna County Council on Saturday last, it was decided to terminate the agree* ment with the present ranger. Messrs W. F. Massey and W. Xosworthy, M.P.'s, who were shown over the Waingawa freezing works during their visit to Masterton, expreised their pleasure and astonishment at the proportions and completeness of the works>.
There was a groat rush for seats for the pantomime "Jack and the Beanstalk," at Miss Rive's booking-office in Masterton on Saturday morning. Some anxious citizens arrived on the scene as early as 1.30 in the morning. Before daylight a great crowd had arrived, and at nine o'clock in the morning ©very seat in the dress circle had gone.
"Are you m favour of members of Parliament being brought under ( >he Arbitration Act?" was a question put to Mr Massey in his speech in Masterton on Saturday night. "I am, :: replied the Leader of the Opposition, smilingly, "my salary would go up!" (Laughter.) Mr W. F. Massey stated, in answer to a question in Masterton on Saturday night, that it was absolute nonsense to say that ho had voted against measures which were designed to improve the condition of the working man.""-
The hockey match played at Palmerston North on Saturday, between the Palmerston and Masterton Post and Telegraph teams, resulted in * a draw, each side scoring one goal. R. E- Williams found the net for the visitors.
A meeting of the Caledonian Socity Pipe Band Committee was held in the Dominion Hll on Saurday afternoon, Mr J.iH. Pauling presiding. It was decided' that the tender of the New Zealand Clothing Factory be accepted for the uniforms. The Secretary was instructed to prepare £1 debentures for sale amongst the members of the Society for the purpose of providing the pipes for the Pipe Band, said debentures to be free of interest, and to be repayable when the funds of tho Band aro available. It was decided to recommend the directors to' purchase twelve sets of McDougall's pipes forthwith.
The paper-bag cooking exhibition at Messrs Beale and Co.'s premises on Saturday was very largely attended, ladies having to stand, many mounting the chairs provided, while several took to the counter and shop ladders. The exhibition was a great success, a number of dishes, including Irish stew and beef tea, being turned out of the bags by Mrs Robertson. The absolute cleanliness of the new Perfection stoves were a revelation to those present who had not previously seen them in use, while their usefulness was testified to by testimonials from a number pf local users, which were read out during the afternoon. A'strong point in favour of the Perfection .stoves is their portability', which allows them to be used in winter as a heater, while as. a cooker they were proved to be ou Saturday just "perfection." !
The Leader of the Opposition, was besieged with questions at the close of his addre.ss in Masterton on Saturday night. Some of these were important—others were not. In answer to some of the , more import-ant Mr Massey said he.could not say if income tax had been paid on the £IO,OOO taben out of the Dominion by the Irish envoys. Ho. was not in favour of establishing hereditary titles in New Zealand. It was absolutely impossible to regulate the prices of certain necessaries of life. He was in favour of extending the principle of proportional representation in the Lower House. He could not see how the land tax and customs duties could be removed. The Government should give local bodies and, if necessary, companies, the rigno to develop local electrical power under certain conditions. He favoured boy immigrants if they were all like the first shipment, but he did not favour immigrants who.were likely • io beoome a burden on the Dominioi. The amount voted Sir Joseph Ward for bis" recent trip Heme was £2OOO. Something should; he thought, be done' in respect to the Rimtitaka deviation. He was in favour of the Pongaroa loop-line. It was the fault of the Minister for Public Works that the public works votes were not expended. He had never voted against anything which tended to improve the/oonclition of the working man. On the No-License question, members had to vote according to their pledges.

Mr R. B. Gardiner, Mayor of Levin, who was in Masterton on Saturday, was shown the public baths and various other towji improvements by the engineer (Mr Archer)- He returned to Levin in the afternoon, much impressed with his visit.
