PERSONAL.
Mr R. B. Gardiner, Mayor of Levin, with one or two Councillors of that Borough, arrived in Masterton last evening for the purpose of inspecting the local municipal baths. It is proposed to establish baths in Levin at an, early date. Mr A. H. Herbert, of Eketahuna, will arrive in Masterton after his address at Maurioeville this evening, and will be present at the supper to Mr Massey. Miss Annie Kathleen Montgomery, daughter of Mr and Mrs John Montgomery, of South Road, Ma:terton, who had been in a critical condition for some days, passed peacefully away at her parents' residence early on Friday morning. The lato Miss Montgomery, who was only nineteen years of age, was employed at the Masterton telephone exchange when she'was stricken with the illness which terminated in her ( death.-. She war. an exceedingly popular young'liidy, and the news of her death lias caused widespread sorrow. Mr and Mrs Montgomery and family will have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends iti their sad bereavement. 'Jhe funeral takes place at 2 o'clock to-morrow afternoon. ■
Mr B. J. Dolan, formerly of Masterton. left Napier yesterday for Westport to attend a sitting of the Warden's court on behalf of some Hawke's Bay shareholders in the Mount Radiant Mining Company. The death occurred on Thursday evening (says a Press Association telegram from Wostport) of Mr Jonathan Dixon, district manager for the Westport Coal Company. The' deceased was for about 16 years a mine manager in New South Wales, and took a prominent part in the recovery and restoration of work in connection with several colliery disasters in that State He was 58 years of age at the time of his death. ..-....■ , The Hon. C. Louisson, of Christchurch, .is suffering from an attack of pneumonia. ; , A Greymouth telegram states that Mr P. C. Webb, of the State Mine Union, has announced his candidature for the Grey' electorate in the interests of Labour. It is reported from London that Lady Hall-Jones, who liad been in indifferent health for some time and underwent an operation on June 30th, stood the operation well and was progressing very favourably when the last mail left. The health of Mrs Alfred Matthews, of Waiorongomai, has been causing her friends anxiety of late. The Rev. J. MoCaw, of the liower Hutt, will be a visitor to Masterton to-day. Mr F. H. Wood, a former resident of Masterton. intends taking up his residence at Epsom, Auckland. Major-General Godley returned from the South yesterday morning and went on to Palmerston soon after to attend the Territorial camp there. Mr Too Tipene, also known as Parateno te Raro, has been appointed a member of the Public Trust Office (Natives Reserves) Board. The death is announced at St. Domino's Priory, Dunedin, of Mother Mary Vincent Whitty, in the seventyninth year of her age and the fiftyninth of her religious profession.
