At the meeting of the Finance Committee of the Masterton County Council yesterday, the Chairman (Cr./W. J. Welch) stated that lie had interviewed Mr G: H. Clarke, of Kopuaranga, who had recently acquired a section in Dryerton adjoining a gravel pit supposed to be the property of the Council, and Mr Clark was desirous of fencing in his purchase and expected the Council to bear its share in the cost thereof. The chess match between teams representing Masterton and Lower Valley Clubs takes place in the Y.M.C.A. rooms in Masterton to-night. A man named H. Crossley, agid thirty-three, whose wife and four children were just about leaving tho Old Country for New Zealand, has been missing from Wellington since Sunday. On Monday afternoon a suit of working clothes he had been wearing was found in one of the Lyall Bay bathing sheds. The Poverty Bay Rugby Union passed a resolution urging the New Zealand Union, in accordance with Rule 0 of the conditions governing the Ranfurly Shield matches, to immediately fix a date for a challenge match Poverty Bay v. Auckland. Members expressed indignation at the manner in which their challenge, sent in three or four months ago, had been ignored and a date given the South Auckland match in preference to theirs. Although there have been a number of sales of dairy properties in the Eketahtina district of late, there have been but a few clearing sales, says the Express. At the meeting of the Wellington Presbytery yesterday, the Rev. A. T. A letter was read at the meeting of the Finance Committee of the Masterton County Council yesterday from Mr C. Revell, who during the past, three months has been roadman in charge of the Blairlogie section of the Blairlogie-East Coast Road, complaining of his dismissal by the County Engineer, and claiming one month's wages in lieu of notice. The County Engineer explained to the Committee his reasons for dispensing with .VT'" Revell's services, adding that he had given Revell the option of remaining for another week, which he understobd would be taken advantage of, but Revell had decided to throw up the position at once. It was decided that the explanation given by the Engineer was fully satisfactory, and that the Committee had no recommendation to make in reference to the matter.
