The .second Tasmanian egg-laying competition was won by a Black Orpington pen, which laid 1318 eggs. ' "I/suppose many of you have travelled over the Wairarapa line," remarked Mr S. Bolton during apolitical address at Pahiatua. "If you have, you have had a slow time." Mr S. Bolton, speaking at Pahiatua on Friday night, described the treatment of Mr John Smith, Acting-Mayor of Wellington, as "the most insulting thing ever done in the Dominion." A sum of £lO 16s 9d was paid by the Napier Borough Council for rate supplied between May 12th and July 25th. Some of the Palmerston milk vendors are being charged with adulterating their milk. There are at present sixteen male and two female patients in the Mastcrton Hospital. The Napier musical competitions will extend from August 23rd to August 29th, inclusive. Bushfellers are very difficult to obtain in the backblocks of Taranaki, and more difficult to keep. The caretaker's cottage in the Masterton public park is just about com- \ pleted.

A considerable area of land in the Masterton district is being put down in potatoes just now. The rainfall registered in Hawke's Bay for the month of July varied from 2.96 inches in Napier to 5.95 inches at Waipukurau. Potatoes are selling for £2 per ton in Southland. In Masterton they are being sold for about £7 10s. The latest return from the Worksop dredge is 1560z. Bdwts. for 127 hours' work. This constitutes a record for the dredge. . The engineer of the Pahiatua County Council reported to Saturday's meeting of that body that considerable damage had been done by the floods of I last month.

The total strength of the cadet force in New Zealand is given by Major Macdonald at 29,607. Rita and William Ross, aged respectively two and five years, found a bottle of belladonna in their parents' house at Auckland, and took doses of the drug. They are still living. Captain McKillop and one or two other officers of the Masterton Mounted Rifles have gone to Palmerston North to attend a camp of instruction which is being held this week. A meeting of the Pahiatua-Akitio A. and P. Association is to he held tomorrow, to consider the question of a new site for a showground. Sunday was a typical spring day in Masterton, and scores of people availed themselves of the opportunity to ride or drive into the country; A young woman suffering from scarlet fever has been admitted to the fever ward at the Masterton Hospital. I The new Supreme Court buildings in ' Masterton, with their facings and' pillars of Oamaru stone, will present a very handsome appearance when completed. Good progress is being made with the contract. • The Old Boys of Wanganui College who are resident in the Wairarapa held a social re-union in the Marquis of Normanby Hotel, Carterton, on Friday evening last. I Mr G. R. Sykes will address a meet- | ing in the Kuripuni Hall on Thursday evening next. He will probably also uddress a meeting at Lansdowne this week.

Bushfellers have seen a couple of huias in the bush in the Maungatarere Valley. They are anxious to know how to capture the birds without injuring them. Most of the heads of departments at the Waingawa freezing works are at present on holiday. They will return in a week or two to give the works a thorough overhaul in time for the opening of the season on October Ist.

, Referring to the agitation for the deviation of the Rimutaka railway, the Carterton paper says: —"Masterton appears to be going into the matter with considerable energy and business-like method, and we should like to see a little more life put into the efforts of Carterton's leading people." A meeting of the Masterton Park Beautifying Committee will be held in the Borough Council Chambers this evening, for the purpose of discussing with a sub-committee of the Borough Council the plans for erecting the Coronation Memorial in the Park. It is expected that the electricity class at the Masterton Technical School will be commenced on Thursday week. Intending students will be interested to learn that the Managers have placed an order for a large quantity of, electrical apparatus for purposes.. 1 , ; , ; Dr. Cook has stil) several Territorials to medically examino in the.Masterton district, and the work is likely to occupy several .weeks longer. So far, less than three per cent, of those who have been examined have been rejected as unfit. At the Y.M.C.A. Strangers' Tea in Masterton''last evening, Mr'A. Snowball gave a very interesting address on or Pressing into Service." The speaker was attentively followed by a large number of members and .strangers present. A solo was also rendered by Mr Clough. At the conclusion of the meeting, a vote of thanks was passed to the ladies of St. Matthew's Church for the provisions. Mr R. E. Jones occupied the chair.

Melt an ounce of leaf gelatine in a quarter pint of hot water, add three-quarters of, a pint of orange juice, the flavoured sugar, and as much more sugar as may be nee- i essary, 'and bring nearly to boiling point. Have ready in a large basin three whites of eggs, strain in the hot liquid, and whisk until quite stiff. Pile in rooky heaps on a crystal dish. SWISS ROLL.— Two teacupfuls caster sugar, two teacupfuls flour, two rteaspoonfuls baking powder, four eggs. Mix the sugar, flour, and baking powder together, and break the eggs into the dry ingredients, beating all for five minutes. Have ready a flat tin such as is usued for a batter pudding ,and pour the mixture in evenly, baking for eight or ten minutes in a sharp oven. Turn on to a sheet of sugared paper, spread with jam quickly, and roll the cake carefully while still hot, otherwise it will crack. Serve with* these "Dragon" Blend, one of the "best of high-class teas. The teas used for this blend are extremely choice and mostly first pickings; It possesses great body, the texture is fine, and the aroma and bouquet are exquisite. The "Dragon" Blend is blended and packed by the Empire Tea Company, Wellington, and is sold by most grocers in this district at 2s 8d per lb'.

A Berkshire sow pig which turned the scale at 557ilbs was recenb'y offered at the Addington sale. Some very large trout are to be seen in the Waingawa river just now. These have evidently come up from the Waharapa Lake to spawn. The Taranaki Acclimatisation Society has received a consignment of 50,000 brown trout ova from Hakateramea, South Canterbury. A meeting of electors interested in the candidature of Mr O. R. Sykes was held in the Kuripuni Hall on Saturday evening last. Mr A. Collie occupied the chair, and there was a good attendance of electors. A strong committee was formed, and arrangements made for a thorough organisation of the district. The Farmers' Union "Advocate" draws attention to the fact that a determined opponent of the freehold in tho House of Representatives has justpurchased a considerable area of freehold land. The annual meeting of the Wellington District of the Congregational Union of New Zealand will be opened in the Terrace Church on Wednesday. Tho delegates representing the Masterton Church are Messrs J. Hunter, and A. Hendrv, Mr and Mrs Redman, Mrs Joy, and the Rev. A. Hodge. It is somewhat remarkable that during the last few months the Mayor of one New Zealand city has died, and the Mayors of four other cities or towns havo undergone serious operations. Mr Hogg, M.P., told the House on Friday night that the smoke was so terrible in some of the tunnels on the Rimutaka railway that it had made black-faces of some of his friend Mr Buchanan's Lincoln sheep! • At the conclusion of his address at Eketahuna on Friday night, Mr G. R. Sykes was asked several questions, and answered them in a satisfactory manner. The candidate was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his address. An Auckland telegram says that Captain Andrew Sloane fell over a cliff while walking in his garden at Heme Bay, and sustained injuries from which he died in the hospital. William Allen, a clerk employed by the West-port Coal Company in Oamaru, pleaded guilty to the theft of £2B, the property of his employers. He was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.

Two fires occurred at Napier on Friday night. The tailoring workshop of D. Evans;Avas gutted j- .and a twostoried dwelling at West"'Shore, owned by the Napier Sailing Club, was burnt down.

The retiring directors of the Masterton Dairy Company are Messrs J. C. Ewington, R. Kibblewhite, and R. Wilton. They are eligible for re-elec-tion. There will also be a director elected to replace the late Mr H. Holmes.

The Masterton Dairy Company's directors have decided not to pay a dividend on share capital this year. They are, instead, writing down the machinery account by 5 per cent. The final payment to milk suppliers will be a penny per lb of butter-fat, making the total payment for the season a little over lOd per lb. The disposal of next season's output will be considered at a meeting to be held on Saturday, September 3rd. Mr T; W. Kirk told the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society that during the last three years there had been added to the area of commercial orchards in this country a totaV of 5,000 acres, which did not include domestic orchards, and the latest turn published by the Government, which was in 1908, showed that there were then 28,000 acres of land laid out in commercial orchards in Now Zealand.
