SPORT AND DRILL.
The young athletes of Auckland ere up in' arms—tmietaphorioally t pe ixin,* —because the demands of the Defence Department require that tl ey shall drill instead of play football ard hockey on the weekly half-holiday. This is where the compulsory t hoe is .going to pinch. New ZeaUneirs love their country. They are proud to be Britishers. They would •the ilast drop 1 of their brother's hlood in the defence of the Empire. Bvt to lose a ,game of football or hockey —well, that i» asking altogether too much of them! Football, cricket, hockey, horse-racing—these be thy gods, 0 Israel! After all, however, the Legislature has limited the compulsory age to twenty-one, and ac ffche young isports who will have to sacrifice the half-holidays in the interests of their country have not got votes, dt does not matter much—to the politicians.
