AN INTERESTING DEBATE.
ON THE LAND QUESTION
An interesting debate took place in Murray's Hall, Masterton, last evening, on the subject "That freehold, with limitation of area is the best land tenure in the interest of the Dominion." The debate was between teams from the Eketahuna Farmers'. Union and the Masterton Parliamentary Debating Society. Messrs W. B. Matheson, Renby, A. H. Herbert and B. Morris, for Eketahuna, took the affirmative, while the Masterton team, consisting of Messrs J. C. Cooper, W. Kemp, J. R. Cole, and E. Flanagan, supported the negative. Mr P. L. HoMings acted as judge. After a keen debate, the judge decided in favour of the visitors, whom he awarded 237 marks out of a total of 400. The Masterton team was close up with i:o0 marks. The positions of the various competitors were as follows, the possible marks being 100:—Mr Matheson 69, Mr Cooper 66, Mr Herbert 64, Mr Kemp 59, Mr Cole 53, Messrs Renby, Tlanagan and Morris 52 each. Mr J. Pryor, on behalf of the Society, returned thanks to the Eketahuna party for having visited Masterton. Mr Herl>ert replied on behalf of the visitors.
